System Protection
Developing the tools, methods and guidelines to advance grid protection capabilities.
Research and Development Challenges
The focus of this research is to develop tools, methods, and guidelines for planners and protection engineers to check protection settings for changing system conditions, tools for proactively identifying protection mis-operations and near-misses from a large data repository, validating short-circuit models based on event data, and guidelines to explicitly model protection systems in planning studies.
In the years to come, we plan to:
- Knowledge transfer via webcasts and workshops
- Protection tools and algorithms
- SHOVAL tool for automating short-circuit model validation
- Protection Settings Peer Review Tool for relay settings analysis
- Next Generation Protection Engineer Virtual Workshops
- Wildfire: short circuit faults and broken conductor detection
- Methods for Configuring Power Swing Blocking
- Protection Solution to Subsynchronous Oscillations
- On-line Workshops on Writing Macros for ASPEN and CAPE
- Protection considerations under extreme weather
- Roadmap to adopt Centralized Protection Schemes (CPS) for transmission protection
- Protection considerations for grid enhancing technologies
- Applying AI for Protection Training, Protection Setting Calculation, and Misoperation Investigations
