Transmission Operations and Planning
EPRI’s Transmission Operations and Planning Area addresses Transmission and Bulk Power System needs through dedicated research programs. Task Forces provide a means for EPRI to provide project guidance and serve as a primary vehicle for R&D technology transfer to members.
What we do: planning and operating the power system
EPRI’s Transmission Operations and Planning (TO&P) team conducts research, development, and demonstration projects to support transmission owners and independent system operators (ISOs) in planning and operating the bulk power system reliably and economically to provide a safe and environmentally responsible source of electric power for society.
The TO&P scope of R&D and team of subject matter experts span all aspects of transmission planning and operations, from real-time operations to long-term planning, and cut across different topical areas, as shown here.
How we develop and deliver research
We develop and deliver our research to the industry through a number of initiatives ranging from membership in the annual research portfolio to collaborative supplemental, R&D applications, and government projects. These efforts all work in conjunction together to advance the research and bring it to the industry for application.
ANNUAL RESEARCH PORTFOLIO (ARP)
Annual research performed collaboratively through the Programs and Project Sets.
R&D APPLICATIONS
1-on-1 application of EPRI research tools and SME to meet industry needs.
COLLABORATIVE SUPPLEMENTALS
Collaboration with multiple utilities/ISOs to further direct and apply research.
TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION (TI)
Driving thought leadership, advanced R&D, and technology incubation.
BOARD INITIATIVES
Working with groups across the institute to accomplish broad impact Board initiatives such as Resource Adequacy, climate resiliency, and electrification.
GOVERNMENT PROJECTS
Working alongside utility partners as well as national labs to leverage government opportunities.
Maximizing value: what you get from our research
- 138 Leading edge research products
- 35 Cutting-edge software tools for power system modeling, simulation, and analysis comprising the planning, operation, and protection areas
- 57 Peer utilities and ISOs sharing practices providing leadership and guidance from around the world
- 331 Subject matter experts participating from member utilities that are an extension of your staff, with a combined experience of more than 3000 years in power systems modeling, simulation and analysis including world-class subject matter experts in Transmission Planning and Operations
